Raleigh, North Carolina Camping Guide

Looking to escape to the great outdoors? Pack your tent and the kids and escape the city for an outdoor adventure with Greater Raleigh, North Carolina camping. Wake County has a number of parks and lakes that offer various types of camping grounds and RV camping facilities.

Camping in Wake County

Clemmons Educational State Forest

An environmental education facility featuring "talking tree" and "talking rock" trails, as well as a large picnic shelter, picnic area, hiking trails, camping and ranger-conducted programs. Admission is free. Guided tours are available.

Falls Lake State Recreational Area

This 12,000-acre lake is surrounded by 26,000 acres of woodland and offers a variety of activities. Come for the day, bring your fishing gear and picnic basket, and set sail from the boat launch, or swim in one of the designated swimming areas. If you prefer, spend a few days at the family campground, which also offers recreational vehicle hook-ups and dump site. Falls Lake is located fourteen miles north of Crabtree Valley on Hwy. 50; camping accessible from N.C. Hwy. 98 West.

Jordan Lake State Recreational Area

A 13,900 acre lake and its surrounding park features a full-service marina, numerous hiking trails and picnic areas. Camping facilities include recreational vehicle hook-ups and utilities, fishing and swimming areas. Twenty miles west of Raleigh off U.S. 64 between Apex and Pittsboro.

Lake Wheeler

Sixty acres of parkland and a 635-acre lake offer a variety of recreational activities, including fishing, sailing, canoeing, rowing and kayaking. Volleyball and picnic facilities also are available. The Tar Heel Regatta is held here each spring, and bass tournaments are held throughout the summer. Located approximately 15 miles southwest of Raleigh on Lake Wheeler Rd.

William B. Umstead State Park

Take a leisurely stroll along a nature trail or a more extensive hike into the heart of the pine and hardwood forest on 17 miles of hiking and bicycle trials. Family and group camping facilities include picnic tables, rowboat and canoe rentals, grills and hot and cold showers.

Eno River State Park, Durham

Thirty miles of hiking trails along the Eno River make this state park in Durham County one of the more popular camping destinations. Every fourth of July, the "Festival on the Eno" offers visitors arts, crafts, music, dancing, children activities and more. Family camping is available, but campsites are a mile hike into the site.

Kerr Lake Recreation Area, Henderson

Located approximately one hour north of Raleigh, this park features two marinas with boat rentals and numerous hiking trails. Campsites offer RV electrical hook-ups as well as traditional tent sites.
