It is a term coined to refer to the proximity of three major research universities to Research Triangle Park... NC State in Raleigh, UNC in Chapel Hill and Duke in Durham. Triangle has also been broadened to refer to the three cities Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. Often today, it is used to refer to the 5-county Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill MSA, a census laborshed, or the 6-county-26 community planning region called Triangle J. Where is Raleigh-Durham International Airport located?

It is located in western Wake County near Morrisville and I-40, midway between Downtown Raleigh and Downtown Durham. RDU is co-owned by the Cities of Raleigh and Durham and Wake and Durham counties. It is operated by an airport authority.
