RALEIGH, N.C. (September 2004) – Featuring works that rarely travel, the blockbuster exhibition, "Matisse, Picasso and the School of Paris," at the North Carolina Museum of Art promises visitors a brush with brilliance from October 10, 2004 – January 16, 2005. With weekend getaway packages starting under $100, visiting Raleigh this autumn is a bargain for culture cravers desiring to witness artworks never before showcased in the Southeast.

Exploring the vibrant creativity of artists who transformed Paris into the epicenter of modern art and culture from the late 19th century until WWII, this exhibit features 34 paintings, sculptures and drawings selected from the Baltimore Museum of Art's extensive holdings. Many works hail from the renowned collection of Etta and Claribel Cone, whose family fortune derived in part from textile mills in the Carolinas.

While showcasing works by Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne, Bonnard, Monet, Rodin, Modigliani, Braque, Léger and Giacometti, star billing is given to Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, the preeminent masters of French modernism and special favorites of the Cone Sisters. Exhibition highlights include Matisse's ebullient Purple Robe with Anemones and Degas's charming ballerina, Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen, one of the most celebrated sculptures of the modern era.

Exhibition tickets are $12 adults; $9 students/groups of 10+/seniors; children under 12 are free. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster by phone at (919) 834-4000, online at www.ticketmaster.com/venue/115140/, or in person at all Ticketmaster outlets.

The North Carolina Museum of Art is open, Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. –5 p.m. For information: http://www.ncmoa.org/matisse/index-home.html
